Water Damage

Water Damage Categories Explained: Clean, Grey, and Black Water

By iDry Restorations Team Published 2026-05-28

Not all water damage is the same. The restoration industry uses three categories defined by the IICRC S500 Standard to classify water based on its contamination level. Understanding these categories helps you make informed decisions about safety and the appropriate response.

Category 1: Clean Water

Source: Water that does not pose substantial harm to humans. Examples include:

  • Broken water supply lines
  • Overflowing sinks or bathtubs (clean water only)
  • Appliance malfunctions involving clean water supply
  • Falling rainwater (not ground water)

Response: Category 1 water can typically be extracted and the affected materials dried in place, provided drying begins promptly. However, clean water degrades to Category 2 within 48 hours if not addressed, as microorganisms multiply.

Category 2: Grey Water

Source: Water that contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness. Examples include:

  • Discharge from washing machines and dishwashers
  • Overflow from toilets with urine (no faeces)
  • Sump pump failures
  • Aquarium leaks

Response: Category 2 water requires more aggressive drying and disinfection. Affected porous materials may need to be removed. Carpet underlay is typically replaced. Antimicrobial treatment is standard.

Category 3: Black Water

Source: Grossly unsanitary water that contains pathogenic agents. Examples include:

  • Sewage backups and toilet overflows with faeces
  • Flood water from rivers, streams, and seawater
  • Ground surface water entering buildings
  • Standing water that has supported microbial growth

Response: Category 3 water is a serious health hazard. All affected porous materials must be removed and disposed of following regulated procedures. Full PPE is required. Structural materials that cannot be adequately disinfected must be removed. The area requires thorough disinfection and post-remediation verification.

Why the Category Matters

The water damage category determines:

  • What PPE is required for anyone entering the area
  • Which materials can be saved and which must be removed
  • The drying and disinfection protocols required
  • Whether the area needs to be isolated from occupants
  • Disposal requirements for removed materials

When in Doubt, Treat It as the Higher Category

If you are unsure about the water source or how long water has been standing, err on the side of caution. Water that started as Category 1 degrades over time. Professional assessment with moisture meters and experience can accurately classify the situation.
